How is citation rate measured?
Citation rate is the percentage of relevant queries in a vertical that produce an LLM answer citing the brand as a source. Measurement requires a versioned panel of test questions, a stable list of LLMs, and a reproducible protocol. PROEMA practises three formats: Express (30 questions × 5 engines), In-Depth (250 questions × 3 languages × 5 engines), Continuous (monthly refresh).
Why citation rate is the north metric
Page rank no longer tells the story in 2026 because the user no longer browses a list, they receive an answer. The conversion event is no longer the click, it is the citation. "Measuring citation rate is the only honest way to know whether GEO work has produced any effect," argues Lorenzo Eeman, founder of PROEMA. Three protocols cohabit in practice, they differ in panel size, LLM count, languages and cadence.
The three PROEMA protocols
Express, 30 questions × 5 engines, single language. Used in the Express Audit (€2,500 ex VAT, 5 days). It produces a first-cut citation score per engine, a gap analysis vs competition, and a 1-hour debrief. It is enough to decide whether a deeper engagement makes sense, not enough to drive strategy alone.
In-Depth, 250 questions × 3 languages (FR, EN, NL, DE, ES) × 5 engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot). Used for the In-Depth Audit. It produces a per-vertical scoreboard, a 12-month roadmap, and the baseline for any 12-month retainer. Total: 7,500 LLM responses analysed.
Continuous, Vertical-specific panel refreshed monthly, with secondary tests on Meta AI, Mistral Le Chat and You.com. Used inside monthly retainer packages. It produces a moving citation rate, regression alerts, and quarterly performance reviews.
What citation rate does not measure
Three caveats to share with any client. (1) Citation rate is non-deterministic, the same query asked twice can return slightly different answers, especially on Perplexity where freshness scoring is aggressive. PROEMA averages across 3 repetitions per question to reduce noise. (2) Citation rate doesn't equal traffic, a citation can fire many times without producing a click. Track the AI Performance Report on Bing Webmaster Tools and AI Crawl Control telemetry on Cloudflare to complete the picture. (3) Citation rate is volatile: a single algorithm change (the September 2025 Reddit drop on ChatGPT caused a -50 pt collapse in two weeks per SEMrush) can shift the measurement independently of any action on the brand side, which is why it is read over a rolling window rather than a single snapshot. Counterintuitive finding. The Princeton "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" study (arXiv 2311.09735, November 2023) measured that adding sourced citations and quantitative statistics to a page increases its visibility inside LLM answers by 40.6%, while classic SEO optimisation (keywords, tags) produces no measurable gain. The north-star metric of GEO is not ranking, it is the inclusion rate inside the generated synthesis.
